The EGM Announcement

To all Company and Club members

An extraordinary general meeting was held in November to change our Rules to comply with HMRC as we were being removed from the list of Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs).

Unfortunately our appeal against that decision failed as, apart from the timimg of those changes, they have now informed us of other areas where we contravene the regulations. While some of them relate to the wording in our Memorandum & Articles of Association which we can easily amend, the issue which has caused most consternation is the fact that Bridge is not recognised as a sport and that any sports club which promotes participation in a game not recognised as a sport cannot be registered as a CASC.

We intend to resolve this by the Bridge section reforming as a separate independent club which cannot be advertised on the Hallam Grange website. The members of the newly formed club will remain as Social members of our club, continuing to use our facilities and paying an annual levy which will bring their annual subscription to the current level of the Bridge section. This is acceptable to HMRC as long as we do not promote the new Bridge club.

These changes need to be formally agreed at a further extraordinary general meeting for both Company and Club members. This has been arranged for Friday 13 January, the Company meeting to start at 7.30 pm with the Club meeting at 8.00. It is important financially that Hallam Grange regains its CASC status and I hope that these meetings are well supported so we can progress our application.
